The COVID-19 pandemic is having a traumatic impact on education.
The Los Angeles unified school district is bracing for an uncertain future. Educators across the country are working to find solutions that would allow graduating seniors to end the school year on schedule.
On March 17, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom said that Nearly 99% of the state’s K through 12 schools are going to be shut out for an indefinite amount of time, and It is unlikely many of the schools, few if any, will open before the summer break.
I asked some friends who are educators for advice on what parents can do while at home, waiting out the COVID-19 virus. This is the advice they gave.
Consider their Mental Health
The most important thing right now is mental health. Engage in music, art, reading, and talking and laughing together is key (unless someone is sick). Don't push them. They are stressed and you (the parent) are stressed...
Work only a few hours a day 2-3 hrs... not 6…
Build life skills
Teach them life skills
· How to cook
· How to clean
· How to sew
· Crochet
· Paint
· Repair things
Keep the brain working
Watch cnn10 and journal.
Have daily conversations about what they are feeling. Prepare them for adversity, teach them how to make a 911 call (just in case.) Teach them about first responders, who they are and the work they do. Also, write letters to first responders and military, or their local service agents (ie Doctor, fire fighters etc.)
Have them read the newspaper, and/or encyclopedia every day. They should use the time to learn about the world, other countries, and their place in the world.
Journaling for example: My life during the pandemic.
What they may miss in the last 3 months of school, they can recoup anytime... they can never recoup this precious time to be with their family and bond... learning is not just in a classroom... it starts from home
